Tee Shirts Are Named After Their Shape.
Back in the 1800s, people started cutting their long underwear in half, separating the top from the bottom. These top parts were the first tee shirts, and were called tee shirts because their shape resembled that of the letter T. By the 1920s, “tee shirt” was officially listed in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
The First Promotional Tee Shirt Was Given Away For the Wizard of Oz.
Cheap custom tee shirts are one of the most effective, widely used marketing tactics nowadays. According to a study from the Advertising Specialty Institute, cheap custom tees were able to sway the opinions of about 57% of people. And believe it or not, marketers have been using custom tees for more than 75 years. Back in 1939, the first promotional tee ever printed was made for The Wizard of Oz.
There Is a Record of Most Tee Shirts Ever Worn.
In October of 2007, Nick Umbs of Burke, Virginia spent six hours breaking the U.S. record for most tee shirts ever worn at once. Starting small and working his way up to 10XL, Umbs somehow managed to put 183 tee shirts on at the same time.
Who knew that tee shirts were named after their shape? Or that promotional tee shirts were as old as the Greatest Generation? Or that there was a record for wearing an insane amount of tee shirts? Well, you do now, and are all the richer for it.
