Let’s be honest, the fashion world is cold, cruel, and extremely fickle. With trends coming and going at the speed of light, it can be difficult if not all but impossible to keep up and stay ahead of what’s hot and what’s not. However, there are some trends and styles that are will simply never become passe. A comfortable t-shirt and jeans, a pair of killer heels or pumps, and of course the little black dress are all examples of fashion mainstays. Now, you can add camo clothing to the equation.
It seems that everyone is going camo clad these days, even babies and pets! Whether it’s on the runways of the fashion capitals of the world or in the backwoods and rural areas of the United States, it seems that camouflage clothing for men and women is everywhere to be found. Simply put, camouflage camo cloths aren’t just reserved for military personnel and hunters anymore.
Camouflage clothing first made it’s civilian debut during the late 1960s and early 1970s when returning Vietnam veterans joined forces with passionate war activists during protests. The juxtaposition of a soldier dressed in camouflage while protesting the very war he fought made a powerful, lasting statement.
Hunting camo clothing came into existence during the 1970s, when an avid hunter decided to try to recreate the popular military pattern using a magic marker. However, camo clothes didn’t make its way onto the civilian dress scene until the the 1980s, when budding alternative, grunge, and punk rock musicians began adopting the pattern as a symbol of anarchy. Ironically, camouflage became the official “un-official” symbol of the counter culture movement.
Fast forward to today, and camouflage is enjoyed and worn by a number of fashion genres, from high fashion to urban fashionista to country chic. Part of camouflage’s appeal lies in its versatility, which allows it be easily styled and worn in a number of different ways.
