Did you know that 67% of partners now say that the internet is their primary source of information regarding engagement rings? It’s a different world out there than it was 20 or more years ago. Back then, most people would have been at the mercy of a salesman. People would have been limited in selection to whatever was in their local area.
These days, many people are not only researching rings online — they’re buying them, too. Sometimes, though, more choices aren’t always a good thing. Having an overwhelming number of choices can, in some ways, make the decision more difficult. For this reason, we’ve come up with a quick list of things you should keep in mind as you search for rings online.
1. The Most Popular Types of Diamonds
Although popularity doesn’t guarantee anything, there are certainly certain cuts of diamond that the majority of people find appealing. This is because each cut type has certain properties it brings to the diamond. A round cut — which is by far the most popular, at 47% of purchased engagement rings — allows for the diamond’s brilliance to take center stage. Also popular as the princess, cushion, and emerald cut. What’s less preferred? Asscher, pear, and radiant cuts.
2. Do You HAVE to Get a Diamond?
No, of course not. However, it’s worth noting that 87% of brides prefer diamonds over other stones. Why do partners prefer diamonds? A lot of it comes down to tradition and having something that’s clearly identifiable as an engagement ring. Diamond rings are also long lasting, and can be passed down through generations. Because diamonds are typically “clear,” they are also great at matching everything one wears, which might not be true of, for example, a large ruby gemstone. Luckily, most partners who prefer alternate stones tend to make their preference clear beforehand.
3. What Features are Important?
There are a few things partners rate as most important in what they look for in a ring, according to Wedding Wire. The most important factor for most partners is actually the “overall design of the ring,” with 87% agreeing. What does this mean? A unique design that fits the wearer’s personality is often appreciated. If you’re not sure, take a look over the jewelry they already own. If they love “bling,” go for a ring with diamonds along the band. If they’re more minimalist, aim for a single round-cut stone. Similarly rated as important were “sentimental nature of the ring” and “color of the diamond.”
